In this piece we explore the notion of “Matchroom FC” – a phrase used to describe the casual boxing fans that watch Sky Sports and support their fighters.
Here, we consider how the boxers would shape up they were actually a football team and what players each fighter draws comparisons with. So where better to start than with Mr. Matchroom himself?
Manager: Eddie Hearn
The cockney wheeler-dealer has obvious comparisons to Harry Redknapp. Like a struggling Pompy, Hearn saved Matchroom FC from relegation with smart signings and much like Our ‘Arry’s Spurs side, turned a once flailing team into attractive and attacking side capable of major honours.
Though Eddie may consider himself the Special One, his on-going feud with specialist-in-failure-to-promote-Deontay-Wilder-properly, Shelly Finkel, is growing tiresome and he will have to play more risky matches if he is to win over hardcore fans.
He deserves a lot of credit for knocking Frank Warren of his perch, but for how long remains to be seen, particularly the new investment other teams have got from TV money.
